PREFACE

Via della Grammatica is suitable for young adults and adults at beginner-intermediate level (A1-
B2 Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) and for LS/L2 Italian language
courses.
This text is a practical and straightforward grammar book consisting of 40 Units, each of which
deals with one or more areas of grammar. In each Unit grammar is presented using clear and con-
cise tables, which provide standard and practical use of the rules, rather than theoretical analysis.
The grammar points are accompanied by a wide range of stimulating and enjoyable activities,
enabling students to learn empirically and to practise using Italian grammar rules. Information
about aspects of everyday life, culture and, in some cases, literature – introduced through many
exercises and activities – encourages students to enrich and widen their knowledge of Italian soci-
ety, history and civilisation. This information is often in the form of authentic materials, including
articles from the press, literature, publicity and songs.

Lexis is introduced gradually, and reflects the use of current everyday language. To make the
activities more interesting, new semantic groups are sometimes presented with an image to aid
learning.

At the end of every 5 Units, a set of exercises tests the grammar taught in those Units. The 8 tests
are complete with self-assessment tools, which provide plenty of opportunity for independent
learning.

Via della Grammatica can be used as a teaching tool for learning and checking grammar in a vari-
ety of Italian courses. Assisted by the keys to the tests, the book is ideal for self-study. For this
reason, it can be used independently or combined with a course book for teaching Italian to for-
eigners.
